What Are Pancreas & Gallbladder Disorders?

The pancreas is an organ located in the upper abdomen, behind the stomach and is responsible for producing enzymes in the digestion process. It is also involved in the production of insulin which controls blood sugar levels. The gallbladder is a small pear-shaped organ located under the liver, and it stores bile which helps break down fats. Pancreas and gallbladder disorders are a few of the many types of gastrointestinal (GI) conditions that affect the digestive system. Some examples of pancreas and gallbladder disorders include:

Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas, often characterised by upper abdominal pain that may spread to the back depending on the severity. Common causes of pancreatitis include gallstones, excessive alcohol consumption and side effects of certain medications.

Cholecystitis

Cholecystitis is the inflammation of the gallbladder as bile (a digestive juice) gets trapped and build up in the gallbladder. The most common cause of cholecystitis is the formation of gallstones that block bile from draining out of the gallbladder.

Gallstones and Bile duct stones

Gallstones typically first develop in the gallbladder. Gallstones are more common with older age, females and in those who are overweight. Gallstones can cause pain by blocking the exit of the gallbladder and this sometimes also leads to cholecystitis. Bile duct stones often are a result of stones passing out from the gallbaldder into the bile ducts. Common symptoms of gallstones include sudden and severe upper abdominal pain, vomiting, dark urine and pale stools.

Pancreatic cancer and gallbladder cancer

While pancreatic cancer and gallbladder cancer are not common, they often are diagnosed late as they can be asymptomatic in the early stages. Symptoms can include abdominal discomfort, loss of weight, jaundice, dark urine, pale stools and diarrhoea. Treatment depends on the stage of cancer.
