What Are Stomach Disorders?

The stomach is an organ located in the upper left part of the abdomen. Stomach disorders are a few of the many types of gastrointestinal (GI) conditions that affect the digestive system. Common stomach disorders include:

Gastritis

Gastritis is the inflammation of the stomach lining, characterised by abdominal pain, indigestion or vomiting. Gastritis is commonly caused by a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, excessive alcohol consumption or side effects of certain medications.

Gastroenteritis/Stomach flu

Gastroenteritis or stomach flu is an infection in the stomach and small intestine, typically caused by bacteria or viruses. Common symptoms of gastroenteritis include persistent diarrhoea and vomiting, indigestion and abdominal pain.

Peptic ulcers

Peptic ulcers are breaks that develop on the stomach lining, often associated with abdominal pain, nausea and bloating. The most common causes of peptic ulcers are infection with the helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria and long-term use of certain medications. Ulcer can cause abdominal pain, bleeding and occassionally can rupture.

Gastroparesis

Gastroparesis is the inability of the stomach to empty its contents, often associated with bloating, nausea and vomiting. The exact cause of gastroparesis is often unknown, but it may include complications of diabetes, side effects after stomach surgery, frequent use of certain medications or a nerve injury.

Stomach cancer

Stomach cancer while not the commonest cancer, often has a poorer outcome due to it being often diagnosed late. Risk factors include Helicobacter pylori infection, smoking, older age, male and consumption of preserved food such as salted fish. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and weight loss. However it can often have minimal or no symptoms in the early stage. Treatment often depends on the stage of disease but can include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
