What Are Liver Disorders?

The liver is an organ positioned on the right side of the abdomen, under the ribcage. It is a vital organ responsible for digestion, energy conversion and storage, and waste filtering. Liver disorders are a few of the many types of gastrointestinal (GI) conditions that affect the digestive system. Some common liver disorders include:

Viral Hepatitis

Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis B and hepatitis C are the more common types of viral hepatitis, typically caused by viral infections transmitted through sexual contact, sharing of needles or from mother to infant during pregnancy.

Fatty liver disease

Fatty liver disease is the buildup of fats in the liver, typically due to excessive alcohol consumption, obesity and diabetes. Fatty liver disease may result in abdominal discomfort, nausea and fatigue but is very often asymptomatic. Long standing fatty liver can lead to liver cirrhosis.

Liver cirrhosis

Liver cirrhosis is the scarring and hardening of the liver due to repeated liver injury. Common causes of liver cirrhosis include excessive alcohol consumption, Hepatitis B and fatty liver. Over time, the liver may be unable to regenerate and repair fully, eventually compromising its function. When the liver becomes severely damaged, it may result in liver failure, where the liver stops functioning properly. Liver cirrhosis is may be associated with swelling of the abdomen or lower limbs, nausea and fatigue.

Liver cancer

Liver cancer may either originate from the liver itself or has spread from other parts of the body eg colon to the liver. Cancer that has spread from other parts of the body is more common then liver cancer that originates from the liver. Cancer that originates from the liver is often associated with Hepatitis B or liver cirrhosis.
