What Are the Components of Lifestyle Modification Measures?

Lifestyle modification is a broad concept encompassing various components. These are:

  • Diet and Nutrition: Food rich in dietary fibers like whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits ensure proper bowel movement and prevent constipation and bloating. In certain disease conditions, a ‘gluten-free’ diet is needed.
  • Adequate fluid intake: Drinking an adequate amount of water helps to cleanse your digestive tract, soften your stool, and prevent constipation.
  • Alcohol reduction: Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to liver cirrhosis, long term pancreas injury as well as gastritis. Men should consume a maximum of 3 units of alcohol per day and ladies 2 units per day. 1 unit being approximately 250 mls of standard beer.
  • Physical activity: Regular exercise has benefits for overall health, including cardiovascular health. Exercise also helps to prevent metabolic diseases including fatty liver disease. It is recommended for 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise ( eg brisk walking ) per week.
  • Smoking cessation: Nicotine in cigarettes results in appetite suppression and also predisposes to reflux disease.
  • Going to bed at least 2 hours after eating food.
