How Is Acid Reflux Treated?

Nowadays, the mainstay of treatment of GERD is anti-acid medications. In most cases, medications are very effective in controlling acid reflux. Complications such as strictures may be managed by endoscopic techniques as well. For the few patients who do not respond well to medications or have side effects from medications, then surgery might be an option.

Over-the-counter medications

The options include:

  • Antacids that neutralise stomach acid
  • Medications to reduce acid production

Prescription medications

Prescription-strength treatments for GERD include:

  • Prescription-strength H-2-receptor blockers
  • Prescription-strength proton pump inhibitors
  • Medication to strengthen the lower oesophagal sphincter

Surgery

  • Fundoplication. The surgeon wraps the top of your stomach around the lower oesophagal sphincter, to tighten the muscle and prevent reflux.
