Dr Kenneth Koo

Specialist in Endoscopic Procedures in Singapore With 20 Years Experience

  • Endoscopic procedures are one of the safest non-surgical procedures for diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses.

Dr Kenneth Koo has extensive experience in treating various GI conditions in adults and is expertly trained in endoscopic procedures.

How Are Endoscopic Procedures Performed?

For upper GI endoscopies a mouth guard will be placed to ensure that the endoscope will not damage your teeth. The flexible endoscope will be passed through your mouth and down your throat into the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum.

Air will be used to inflate your stomach and duodenum giving a proper view of the lining. The camera fitted on the end of the tube will send images into a monitor in the procedure room. Through this monitor, your gastroenterologist will visualise the lining of your digestive system. If any abnormalities are detected, your doctor will be able to take a piece of tissue (biopsy) for further examination if necessary. Small growths ( polyps ) may be removed as well. Once the procedure is completed, the tube will be removed. The procedure generally takes about 15 minutes and sedation can be given to minimise any discomfort.

Colonoscopies are similar in concept as gastroscopes but are inserted through the anus for examination of the colon. It generally takes about 30 minutes to perform and again sedation can be given to minimise any discomfort.

What Are Endoscopic Procedures?

Endoscopic procedures are used to examine the inner lining of your digestive tract. Endoscopic procedures are done to investigate the signs and symptoms of digestive problems. Biopsies can also be taken during the procedure if necessary. At times the procedure may also be used to treat conditions like bleeding or removing foreign substances.

Gastroscopy (Upper GI Endoscopy)

Gastroscopy (upper GI endoscopy) examines the oesophagus, stomach and the beginning of the small intestine known as the duodenum. The procedure uses an instrument known as an endoscope which is a long, thin and flexible tube attached with a tiny lighted camera at one end. This endoscope is inserted through the mouth. Oesophagoscopy examines the oesophagus only whereas a gastroscopy examines the stomach. The instrument used is known as an oesophagoscope and gastroscope respectively. Both these endoscopes are inserted through the mouth.

Colonoscopy

Lower GI endoscopic procedures include colonoscopy which is done to examine the entire length of the large bowel. This process utilises a similar flexible lighted tube known as a colonoscope which is inserted through the anus.

Sigmoidoscopy

Sigmoidoscopy is used to inspect the descending colon, sigmoid colon and rectum.

How Do Endoscopic Procedures Help in the Treatment of GI Conditions?

  • They can be used to stop the bleeding eg from ulcers
  • They can be used to remove polyps or foreign objects.
  • They can be used to widen narrow parts of the gastrointestinal tract

Possible Risks

Diagnostic endoscopic procedures for a healthy person are generally safe, especially when performed by experienced specialists. The risks of complications associated with the procedures are small. Complications include:

  • Perforation of the gastrointestinal tract. This occurs in approximately 1 in 10,000 cases for gastroscopy and 1 in 1000 for colonoscopy.
  • Bleeding after polyp removal or biopsies.
  • Complications from sedation eg breathing difficulties, low blood pressure, lung infection
